Purpose
The Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association is dedicated to preserving information and providing education about the cultural and heritage legacy related to Appalachian life focused on arts and crafts. It is dedicated to providing public awareness, financial support, promotions, and developing open-to-the-public programs and events related to crafting and/or art that will benefit its crafter and artisan members. It is also dedicated to the public promotion of, fundraising for, and building and maintaining a fee-based open-to-the-public membership to benefit the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall.

Administration
The Appalachian Crafter’s and Artisans’ Association is operated by the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall. The lead position within the Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association is the President, which is automatically held by the President of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall Standing Advisory Board, both of which are volunteer positions. The roles report directly to the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and are currently held by Otto Preske who is a charter member of The Great Smoky Mountains Arts and Crafts Community located in Gatlinburg Tennessee. There is only one paid position which is a remote worker position, an administrative helper who is responsible for overseeing the memberships, financials, and compiling monthly activity reports. This person also reports directly to the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall. Volunteer positions are available for those that wish to help with any efforts including public events and recruitment activities.
Legal
The Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association is registered as a doing business as tradename and owned by the Institute for Natural Philosophy. The Institute for Natural Philosophy is a nonprofit corporation chartered in Tennessee, USA and is a registered 501(c)(3) organization. Membership transactions are processed via the Institute for Natural Philosophy nonprofit PayPal account. Memberships and donations are fully tax deductible.
The Institute for Natural Philosophy board officially approved the creation of the Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association on January 31st, 2026, which was defined as:
[A Doing/Business/As registration of the Institute for Natural Philosophy being exclusively dedicated to the public promotion of, fundraising for, and building and maintaining a fee-based membership open to the public to benefit the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall. It will provide public awareness, financial support, promotions, and develop open-to-the-public programs and events related to crafting and/or art that will benefit its crafter and artisan members. The Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association lead position will be Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association President, which will be an unpaid volunteer position, and will be automatically filled by the President of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall Standing Advisory Board. The President of the Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association can be replaced or removed without notice or cause by the Institute for Natural Philosophy board by approval of the regular board by majority vote of voting regular board members including two of three Executive board members in support of vote or by way of an Executive Board action as described in the Executive Board authorities. All non-paying member and/or worker positions will be volunteers except for one administrator helper who will be responsible for general and financial record keeping, creating paid member monthly status update reports, and seeking member renewals. Operational details of the Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association will be initially created and maintained as a joint effort of the Appalachian Crafters’ and Artisans’ Association President, Institute for Natural Philosophy Director of Operations, and Institute for Natural Philosophy Director of Public Relations. General Information

An electronic newsletter (e-newsletter) is issued on a quarterly basis to all members that request it during their initial sign-up or if they request it after their sign-up. It is only available for those that have an active membership. It is created by the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall or under their supervision and/or by their directive. The President of The Association is given access to it for a final review before it is publicly released.
The Association will host public workshops, events, displays, and demonstrations related to crafts and art education, production, and Appalachian history and education during each year. It will provide opportunities for its professional members to host their own public workshops. Activities may be free or ticketed. Workshops will take place in the International Cultural Center Educational Center. It will also hold an Annual Fundraiser Gala. The Annual Fundraiser Gala will be a ticketed arts and crafts themed event that will include door prizes, a silent auction, a gourmet meal, special speakers, sponsor acknowledgments, and a live demonstration of a visual art creation of the actual event that will be replicated and available for sale. The Association is also closely involved with the annual Artisan and Crafter Exhibition hosted by the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall.

The website domain is already secured, is temporarily forwarded this blog post, and has two connected emails that are active. The first email is used for all general public contact, public event promotions, administrative purposes, public membership renewals, and the quarterly e-newsletter. The second is used exclusively for contact with members signed up under the Crafter/Artisan Professional Membership levels. This includes as related to booking and/or reserving events, workshops, exhibitions, displays, demonstrations, and retail spaces. It is also used for official signups, offers, renewals, official notices, and a Professional Membership Referral Recruitment Program (see below for details). Membership Structure
General Membership Information
The Association has three types of memberships: public, professional, and sponsor. Donations are accepted without membership. Memberships and donations are fully tax deductible. The memberships are open to the public at large, crafters, artisans, and those associated with the crafter/artisan community, and finally sponsors. This includes individuals, businesses, groups, and organizations. All memberships are valid for one year from the member sign-up date. All memberships incur a fee to join and may be paid in full at sign-up or you may spread the membership fee into monthly payments (available for higher levels). Memberships follow a tiered level system with different fees and benefits for each level. General donations made be made here.
Memberships are available by online sign-up in the Membership Fees and Benefits section of the ACAA digital document, available on request, or here on this Knoxville Global Heritage Initiative blog post. Memberships will be made available from the Association website once it is fully developed and launched. Transaction receipts will show Institute for Natural Philosophy and are made via PayPal.

The public has access to three public membership level options which are named after the progression stages of the apprenticeship model: Apprentice, Journeyperson, and Master. Those associated with the crafter/artisan community also have three membership level options and crafters/artisans have six membership level options, all located within the professional memberships. Members receive a discount voucher valid for specific workshops hosted by the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and The Association with a 15%-50% discount per workshop. Workshops qualifying for the discount and the discount amount will be listed on the event listing section of the website. Voucher has a one-year expiration date from date of issuance, has no cash value, and must be indicated during the reservation process and/or presented at time of workshop entrance.
Professional Membership Fees, Qualifications, and Benefits
Professional membership levels are open to qualifying individuals, groups, businesses, and organizations and have six levels with different qualifications and benefits. These levels all qualify for the workshop and referral programs.
Workshops
All professional membership levels members will be able to host and/or participate in workshops hosted by the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and The Association. Workshops are defined as hands-on experiences for the participants where they are shown by demonstration and/or instruction of how to create a specific item and supplied all required materials to make them. All participants will keep the item(s) made by them as part of the workshop. Those hosting and/or participating in these events can offer their participation in or host a workshop for free or set their own pricing (with approval). Workshops will take place in the International Cultural Center Educational Center with final approval for each workshop coming from the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall. Workshops will typically be held on Saturdays and Sundays with each workshop taking less than one day to complete. More complex workshops may require multiple days to complete and some workshops that involve multiple hosts may be a multiple day or weeklong event. Workshops will be classified as beginner, intermediate or advanced with any prerequisites required by the host clearly indicated. Workshops that are not free and participated in or hosted by a member will be charged 15% of all collected workshop fees by the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall. Workshops, relevant information, and signups will be available on the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and The Association websites. All workshop promotions will include issuance of a press release to local media, 20 flyers (per participating or host member), 4 posters minimum, inclusion in The Association quarterly e-newsletter (if timing allows), and a listing in the events section of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and The Association websites. Each participant and/or host workshop member will receive 10 of the flyers and one poster for their own use. The remaining flyers and posters will be placed in the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall and the International Cultural Center Library’s public space board and area. Online listings for each workshop will include a link for reservations with financial processing capabilities provided by the Institute for Natural Philosophy. An agreement is required to participate by all participants and host members.
Professional Membership Referral Recruitment Program
The Professional Membership Referral Recruitment Program is available for all members signed up on any professional membership level. It consists of a $10 credit for each new membership referral sign-up that will be automatically applied to the referring members’ next membership fee when it is due. The credit for the referring members’ account is available immediately during the renewal process if the new referred member paid their annual fee in full at sign up or will be available as soon as the new member has paid at least 50 % of their membership fee. Referral credits have no limits, no expiration date, no cash value, are not transferable, and can only be applied towards membership renewal fees.
Scholarships
All professional membership level members that qualify for the benefit will be able to participate in scholarship opportunities for free retail space in the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall. See In-House Levels 2, 4 & 6 Free Retail Space section below for details of the free retail space program. The scholarships are open to all active professional members regardless of their level and may include one or two weeks or one month of free retail space. Scholarships are not guaranteed and are awarded based on several factors including, but not limited to space availability, the submitted request for consideration, and member ability to occupy the retail space for the available timeframe. Interested professional members need to send a request via email for consideration to the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall after securing their membership. Requests must include member name on the account, contact information, a short biography related to their crafting/art experience, why they feel they should be considered, any requirements such as needed notice to occupy the retail space, and list which lengths they wish to be considered for or all three.

In-House Levels 2, 4 & 6
Free Retail Space
Members are given access to one of the twenty-four retail spaces in the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall for them to sell in person for free with no charges, fees, or commissions. Every effort will be made to ensure each of the twenty-four retail spaces is not of a direct competing nature. All required retail space infrastructure including electricity, shelving, checkout area, register, and a securable keypad entry door will be included. Optionally, if needed, credit card processing equipment will be available for free along with processing via the Institute for Natural Philosophy account (actual processing fees apply). These instances mean that the Institute for Natural Philosophy is acting as a “pass-through” processor so the account must be done in the individuals name and members may receive a tax document with the income listed following IRS requirements. A free custom designed 3-foot x 6-foot color banner or sign will be provided for placement above the retail space entryway that can include the member’s name, business name, website and/or what they are selling. The member and the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall will jointly approve the banner/sign.
Time of retail space length per year is set to each level and occupancy is restricted to active members. 25% of the annual membership must be paid before initially securing retail space with 25% more due before beginning the second month. Retail space and location will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. An approval process is in place that all products must go through to qualify. The approval process is simple and only exists to ensure that quality and appropriate (family friendly) items will be placed in the retail space for sale. The approval process is administered by the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall. 60% of the items placed in the retail space for sale must have been produced by the member occupying the retail space. The retail spaces are required to be open during the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall hours. Operations of the individual retail spaces are the responsibility of the members occupying the retail spaces. Operations of the store retail spaces may be operated by third parties for which members will assume all legal responsibilities. An agreement is required to participate.

Members will have a custom designed 3-foot x 6-foot color banner or sign prominently placed at all recurring events hosted by the Appalachian Live Crafters’ and Artisans’ Mall and The Association that can include the member’s sponsor level, name, business name, website and/or other information. The member and the Director of the Appalachian Live Crafter’s and Artisans’ Mall will jointly approve the banner/sign.
